Click here to order the electronic edition of The Bee.

Young readers see newspapers as a useful, dependable and complete source of information. However, the newspaper is not delivered in ways and at times that are attractive to them. The electronic edition of The Sacramento Bee is the solution. The Bee can now be delivered at a time, place and in a format of their choice.

The electronic edition has the same news, sports, features, business and entertainment as the print edition; except in a digital format that you and your students can view on any computer. The e-edition also has exciting new features that will make using the newspaper and teaching even easier. Your students will be able to:

  • Search by key words - save time!
  • Establish quick links to their favorite sections.
  • Access the last 30 days - great if your students miss something and want to go back.
  • Save articles - great for students working on a research paper.
  • Print articles on regular 8.5x11 inch paper.

Your subscription comes with a CD filled with teacher guides on nearly every subject for all grade levels. There are also lessons, teacher guides and educational resources available online to help you plan your lessons using the e-edition.

The 2009-2010 N.I.E. subscription is available to all classroom teachers at no cost. The Sacramento Bee's Vacation Donation program (funded by Bee subscribers) sponsors your participation. Simply follow the red link below and complete the order form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the e-edition and the printed edition of The Sacramento Bee?

A: The electronic edition, also called the "e-edition," is an exact replica of the print edition, except in an easy to read digital format. The e-edition is laid out just like the print edition of the paper, including all of the news, photographs and illustrations.

Q: How do I access the e-edition?

A: Getting to the e-edition is easy if you follow these three steps ... (1) Go to the login page at www.sacbee.com/nielogin; (2) Select your school and enter your teacher ID (which is found on the teacher verification letter you receive in the mail); and (3) Click submit and enjoy the newspaper.

Q: Can I read the e-edition from any computer, or just computers at school?

A: In case you want to give your students a homework assignment that requires a newspaper, it is okay for your students to login from their home computers. Have them follow the same instructions in the previous answer.

Q: Does it matter whether I have broadband or a dial up Internet connection?

A: No. However a dial up connection through a modem has a much slower connection speed and is not optimal for viewing the e-edition. We recommend using a broadband connection for the best connectivity and enjoyment for your subscription.

Q: Are the advertising inserts available in the e-edition?

A: Most advertising inserts are included in the e-edition. ROP advertising (ads that appear next to news stories) are also in the e-edition. Inserts like Parade magazine and the comics are also included in the e-edition.

Q: What are my options when viewing a story?

A: You can view an e-edition story two ways. "Newspaper View" displays the story just as it appears in the newspaper, with columns and photos in place. "Quick View" is a plain text view of the story and photos. You can e-mail or print the story in either mode.

Q: Can articles, photos, and features such as crossword puzzles and comics be printed out?

A: Yes, simply click on the item you want to print, and select the printer icon of the toolbar.

Q: Do I need special software when viewing the e-edition?

A: Special software is not needed. The special software you need is automatically installed every time you login.

Q: What are the system requirements to view the e-edition?

A: You can read the e-edition on most web browsers running on a Macintosh or a Windows-based PC. You need to have at least version 9 of Adobe Flash Player installed. For best results on a Windows computer, Internet Explorer 6 or higher, or Firefox 2 or higher are recommended. On a Macintosh computer, Safari 3 or higher, or Firefox 2 or higher are recommended. A high-speed Internet connection is also recommended. Some versions of the AOL browser will not display the e-edition.

Q: Can I download the entire paper as a PDF?

A: Yes you can. Using a broadband connection, the download of an entire edition takes about two minutes. On a dial up connection it will be longer. Downloading the entire paper allows the reader to view the newspaper off-line. To download a PDF of the newspaper, you will need to have Adobe Reader on your computer.

Q: I can't see the whole page on my screen. What do I do?

A: If you cannot view the entire width of the page, find a scroll bar along the bottom edge of your web page. You can scroll right or left to view more of the page. You also will be able to navigate up and down using the scroll bar on the right edge.

Q: My login doesn't work. Who can I call?

A: First, be sure you are logging in to the N.I.E. login page found at www.sacbee.com/nielogin. Select your school and enter the teacher ID number found in your verification letter. If this doesn't work, please call (916) 321-1785 for more help.
