Karden's Dream School Garden Competition

Karden the puppet and the folks at the Northern California Home & Landscape Expo invite all students in grades K-6 to enter Karden's Dream School Garden Competition. Students will learn about what plants need to grow and use their creative minds to come up with the perfect school garden. One lucky school will actually WIN that garden!

The competition is easy and fun. Ask your students to dream about what a really great school garden should look like. Then draw up a plan! Teachers are encouraged to submit the best two designs from each class by December 17, 2010.

The authors of Kinder Gardens: Growing Imagination for Children, Michael Glassman and Lisa Ely, will select the four best designs. These four innovative "dream" school gardens will be created and displayed in miniature version at the Northern California Home & Landscape Expo January 28-30, 2011. The public will be encouraged to vote for their favorite display. The dream garden with the most votes wins and that garden will be installed in the following weeks at the winning school!

Here's How the Contest Works

Dream It! -- Make it fun, make it great, make it innovative. The garden could be for food, beauty, insects and animals, or all of these things.
Draw It! -- Student may create their designs on a plain sheet of paper, or they may use the template.
Return It! -- Every design should have a completed entry form attached to it. Return all entries by December 17, 2010 to:

  • By mail: Educational Services Department, The Sacramento Bee, P.O. Box 15779, Sacramento, CA 95852
  • By email: Karden@kardenscorner.com
  • By fax: (818) 921-8416
Win It! -- The top four finalists will each receive a $100 gift certificate for their classroom. The grand-prize winner will receive a DREAM GARDEN that includes up the 500 plants, building materials, and $500 for garden supplies! The garden will be professionally designed based on the winning design.
